The new generation Cotic Soul: The Ultimate Expression of a Modern Steel Hardtail

New 2017 model available, featuring:

  • Stealth/Internal dropper seatpost routing
  • Syntace X-12 Boost 148x12 thru axle option
    (135 QR still available)
  • New Extra Small size

In stock now!

The Soul is the founding model of the Cotic range; initially conceived in 2003 as a Modern Steel Hardtail, we wanted the best frame we could make balancing light weight with toughness and great handling, and it carries that through right to the present day. It's grown and adapted, with dropper seatpost compatibility, tapered headtube, 27.5" wheels and now a bolt thru axle option too.

The Soul has always had amazing adaptability and all round performance. Tough, light, zippy, fun, interactive, durable, comfortable. We have bombed down Pyraneen mountains on our Souls, we have battered across the rocks of the Peak District, Lakes and Scotland. We have strapped bags to them and got some nights in the bivvy bags out in the hills. It's great at all of these things, but at heart the Soul is a singletrack scapel. Fast, responsive, sharp, keen, smooth, but most of all, fun. Zipping between the trees on that sliver of trail wonder, the Soul is THE bike you need to be on. You won't just smile, you will probably be laughing out loud. Who doesn't want a bit of that in their riding life?

Boost148 rear spacing futureproofs the frames, but we have kept the regular chainline compatibility at the other end of the stays as the tyre clearance is already huge. To help you on your way we have Linderets Boostinator conversion kits available for Hope hub users which allows conversion from a 142 axle. Linderets also supplied kits for DT and I-9 hubs aswell.

27.5" wheels bring easier acceleration, lighter weight, and a more interactive feel than larger 29" or Plus wheels, at the expense of slightly less stability and easy rollover on rockier, bumpier terrain. They also more easily package into a small frame, so the proportions suit shorter riders. Now more than ever with the XS size option for riders down to 5ft.

If you're a little taller and 29” or Plus wheels are your jam, then have a look at our Solaris.

Like the idea of the Soul, but want full suspension? Get a look at the Flare.

Feel like you want something a bit harder hitting, or for longer forks than the Soul? Check out our BFe275.

The Cotic Soul: As light as we can make it. As tough as it needs to be. More fun than you would believe. Our ultimate expression of the trail hardtail.

What's New?

New for 2016, the Soul gets a Syntace X-12 Boost 148x12 thru axle option, an Extra Small (XS) size, and updated hose routing for Stealth/Internal dropper seatposts.

Front mech compatibility is maintained, based on using the same p-clipped down tube routing as the internal 'stealth' dropper seatposts and the latest front entry, Shimano Sidewing front mech. If you don't know about SideSwing, check our geek page:

Geometry and Sizing Chart

The chart is a guide to frame size. The Soul275 features Optimised For Inline geometry.

Our original Ultra Compact Geometry was designed around a 100mm travel fork as a minimum. The original geometry also assumed a layback seatpost. Running forks longer than 100mm (most people use 120mm on their Soul these days) shortens the reach (distance from bars to BB) and running an inline or dropper post (which are usually inline clamp) shortens the position from the other end of the bike, squeezing the room available to the rider.

Optimised For Inline takes the rider position we originally intended for 100mm forks on the original Soul and then maintains it for a 27.5" wheel frame layout with 120mm forks installed and an inline seatpost. This has meant lengthening the top tube at the front end to compensate for the longer forks, and slackening the seat angle at the rear to swing an inline seatpost into the same saddle clamp position as a layback version.

The resulting geometry makes the frames look long on the top tube compared to what you might be used to on a traditionally designed 26" wheel bike. However, the new layout is simply tuned for proper position on inline or dropper posts, but the BB, head tube, bars and the saddle are all in the same places as the usually are on a Cotic bike. The effect is to make the top tubes look long when the reach is comparable to our usual sizing. Click here to read in more detail about Optimised For Inline geometry.

If you would like us to help you out with sizing, or are on the cusp of two sizes then drop us a line at size@cotic.co.uk or give us a call on 07970 853531 and we'll be happy to discuss set up based on what you're riding at the moment.
